DFB CUP - Red Devils Advance to Second Round
The Red Devils easily advanced to the second round of the DFB Cup, defeating BFC Dynamo 3-0 in their first competitive match of the 2011/12 campaign. Ilicevic opened the scoring on 18 minutes, before goals from Tiffert and Petsos sealed the utterly merited victory.
In the first competitive match of the new season, FCK head coach Kurz opted to field a 4-1-4-1 formation, naming two new signings. Abel and Rodnei lined up in central defense, with Dick and Jessen at full-back, and Trapp in goal. Petsos anchored midfield, with Tiffert and De Wit in central midfield. Sahan and Ilicevic patrolled the flanks, with Shechter as the nominal target man.
Once referee Rafati whistled play underway on a wet and rainy Saturday afternoon in Berlin, the Red Devils roared off the blocks with De Wit crossing for Sahan at the far post, but the new arrival failed to connect properly with ball. Kurz’s men pushed for an early opening goal, with Shechter causing a lot of trouble for the hosts’ defense. The Red Devils swiftly gained the upper hand and took the lead after 18 minutes when Shechter sent a neat back pass to Sahan, with the winger laying on for Ilicevic on the left. The Croatian national team player did not hesitate to thunder the ball into net with 18 minutes on the clock.
Kurz’s men continued to dominate possession, with Jessen haring down the left wing and dancing his way through the BFC defense to feed Tiffert at the penalty area boundary line. Tiffert doubled the lead on 23 minutes as the new FCK team captain smashed a shot on the volley past Rothe in the home goal.
Olcay Sahan almost added the third goal for the visitors but saw his shot deflected by a BFC defender. Itay Shechter followed suit but was stopped by an opponent before being able to burry the ball in the net. The Israeli striker created the next opportunity a few minutes later but directed his long shot narrowly over the bar.
The home side had the first chance after 36 minutes when Ahmetcik sent a free kick into the penalty area, but Rodnei was on hand to deny Steiner from directing the ball towards the FCK goal. BFC Dynamo upped the tempo a bit in the spell before half-time. However, the two new faces Shechter and Sahan created the last opening of the half, with the Israeli dragging his shot wide.
Kurz made no changes to his side, and Rodnei could have extended FCK’s lead shortly after the restart, but the Brazilian defender directed his header narrowly wide of the left post. Thanos Petsos had the ball in the net on 50 minutes, heading home from a clear-cut Tiffert corner.
Ahmetcik created the most promising chance for the hosts with 61 minutes on clock, but his long-range effort only hit the side netting. Dorge Kouemaha took over from Itay Shechter after 64 minutes.
Kurz’s men continued to hold the upper hand, and De Wit should have scored Lautern’s fourth goal from a brilliant Ilicevic back-heel pass, but Rothe tipped the ball out for a corner kick. Kurz replaced De Wit and Ilicevic by Kirch and Sukuta-Pasu for the closing spell. Kirch created the last chance of the game but directed his shot narrowly wide of the post.
The Red Devils dominated possession for the entire 90 minutes and advanced to the second round of the DFB Cup with a well deserved 3-0 win over BFC Dynamo.
