Sippel and Sam Claim Record Win with U-21

Defending champions Germany remain in contention in Group E of 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying after beating San Marino 11-0 on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, to record their biggest competitive victory at this level.

After the bitter 1-1 against Northern Ireland last Friday, Rainer Adrion’s team faced San Marino in a road game on Tuesday, November 17, 2009. Prior to kick-off, Germany had collected just four points from their opening three fixtures. Having achieved maximum points in San Marino, Adrion’s side now is five points behind second-placed Iceland and eight points adrift of the Czech Republic with a game in hand on both.

FCK players Tobias Sippel and Sidney Sam were part of the starting line-up in Serravalle. It took just four minutes for Mats Hummels – who later added the seventh and tenth goals to claim a hat-trick – to open the scoring with a header. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Daniel Schwaab from the penalty spot, Holger Badstuber and André Schürrle all followed suit to give the visitors a 5-0 half-time lead.

FCK player Sidney Sam added the 6-0 turning in from close range four minutes after the interval, before Hummels scored his second to make it a 7-0 lead. Thomas Müller and substitute Richard Sukuta-Pasu both overcame Eros Gobbi, San Marino’s shot-stopper, prior to Hummels completing his hat-trick and Philipp Bargfrede adding the eleventh with eight minutes to play.

Germany will host Iceland on March 2, 2010. While Tobias Sippel has made his eighth appearance for the Germany U-21 national team, Sidney Sam pulled on national colors for the fifth time in San Marino.
