Moravek and Hlousek Advance to EURO U21 Semi-Final

The Czech Under-21 national team with Jan Moravek and Adam Hlousek advanced to the semi-final of the European Under-21 Championship in Denmark after beating England 2-1 on Sunday, June 19, 2011.

In the 76th minute of a match in which England for once enjoyed the majority of possession Danny Welbeck appeared to have headed Stuart Pearce's team into a semi-final against Switzerland but the team's composure collapsed and they allowed the Czech Republic to score two goals in the dying minutes and progress instead.

It all went down to the wire for the Czech Republic to qualify for the semi-finals. With just a minute of ordinary time to go in their final group match, they trailed 1-0 to England, a scoreline that would have seen England through rather than them. But the 89th minute equalizer from Jan Chramosta broke English hearts. Tomás Pekhart from Sparta Praha added a second four minutes into injury time as England pushed everyone forward in a desperate bid to snatch the game.

Jan Moravek was substituted after 83 minutes while Adam Hlousek did not enter the field of play.

The Czech Republic started off their group stage in good fashion with a 2-1 win over Ukraine with both goals from Borek Dockal before losing 2-0 to group winners Spain. The Czech Republic finished their group stage second behind Spain and will now play Switzerland in the semi-final of the Uefa Under-21 Championships on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at the Herning Stadium in Denmark. Spain will take on Belarus in the other semi-final earlier the same day.

The reward for the winners will be a place in the final at the Aarhus Stadium on Saturday, June 25, 2011.
