Having ended his career as a professional soccer player about ten years ago, the executive chairman of 1. FC Kaiserslautern today still seizes any opportunity to participate in sports. The athletic vita of Stefan Kuntz is very impressive: Kuntz, who was born in Saarland in 1962, made 449 Bundesliga appearances between 1983 and 1999. He played for VfL Bochum, Bayer Uerdingen, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Arminia Bielefeld, and he scored a total of 179 goals. Kuntz also played abroad for Beşiktaş Istanbul in Turkey.
In 1990, the father of two won the DFB Cup Final with FCK and, in 1991, Kuntz won the German Championships with the Red Devils. In addition to that, he was voted German soccer player of the year 1991 and was top scorer of the Bundesliga in 1986 as well as in 1994. Kuntz obtained 25 caps and won the European Championship with the German national team in 1996. Following his career as a professional soccer player, Stefan Kuntz started a career as a coach. “Working as a coach, I was always missing something”, Kuntz remembers today. Therefore, he exchanged the technical area for a desk after having coached Borussia Neunkirchen, Karlsruher SC, SV Waldhof Mannheim and LR Ahlen.
He studied “modern soccer management” by correspondence course. “I realized that I was permanently coming up with new ideas and I was lucky that I had the opportunity to put these into practice at TUS Koblenz in the Regionalliga,” Stefan Kuntz says today. Subsequently, Kuntz became sporting director of VfL Bochum prior to assuming office as executive chairman of 1. FC Kaiserslautern on April 8, 2008.
